The Story Behind Australian Opal Direct
A trusted mine-to-market leader the team behind Australian Opal Direct has been wholesaling, exporting, and retailing 100% genuine Australian Opal for over 40 years. Our story began in the 1960s with Black Opal mining in Lightning Ridge, followed by a quarry expansion in Papua New Guinea in the 1970s. By the early 1980s, we returned to Australia to mine Gold and later Boulder Opal in Opalton, while retailing at the Kuranda Markets. In 2010, we opened our first retail store near the Opal fields in Winton, Queensland.

Australian opals range from around $50 per carat for commercial-grade white opal up to $15,000+ per carat for top-tone black opal from Lightning Ridge. Where are Australian opals mined?
Over 95% of the world's opal supply is mined in Australia. The three primary fields are Lightning Ridge in New South Wales for black opal, Coober Pedy in South Australia for white and crystal opal, and the Queensland fields, including Winton, Quilpie and Yowah, for boulder opal.
