How Old is Opal?

Opal is a miraculous ancient Gemstone that can range in age from 2 millions years old to 60 million years old. Each Opal is one of a kind and no two are exactly alike.

Opal is a water stone, formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through the earth, it picks up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica-rich solution into cracks and voids, caused by natural faults or decomposing fossils. The water evaporates, leaving behind a silica deposit and eventually Opal is formed.

We have had the pleasure to create custom orders for customers with rare Opalized Squid Fossils know as "Belemnite" which are from the ancient inland sea dating back over 30 millions years!
